The CIF Southern Section has taken a page from football’s playbook and will use a ratings system to determine seeds and divisions for the boys and girls lacrosse playoffs.
To begin the season, there are 40 schools grouped in Division 1/2. At the end of the regular season, the computer-based rating system will rank the teams based on several factors, including record and strength of schedule. Those ratings will be used to form the playoff brackets for the three divisions (Division 1, Division 2, Division 3).
Some lacrosse coaches don’t like the new system, mainly because they won’t know where their team stands during the season.
The weekly CIF-SS polls, which are voted on by a coaches committee, won’t be used to determine playoff seeds and whether a team is placed in Division 1 or Division 2 for the playoffs.
The playoffs for boys and girls begin May 1.
